All Saints Anglican School

A nature-inspired treehouse playground for Grades 3-6

Queensland, Australia

Project Type

Primary School Playground

Location

Queensland

Age Group

Grades 3-6 (8-12 Years)

Focus

Gross Motor & Physical Challenge

The Brief

All Saints Anglican School approached Wearthy to design a play structure specifically for older children in Years 3–6. The site already featured several mature trees, and the goal was to create a challenging, gross-motor-focused treehouse-style play space that made use of the existing natural elements.

Unlike early learning environments, this project required a focus on physical challenge, risk-appropriate play, and spaces that would engage children who had often outgrown traditional playground equipment.

The Transformation

"The new playground has been a fantastic addition to our school! One of the standout features is the giant slide, which has quickly become a favourite among the children. Its size and speed bring a real sense of excitement and joy to playtime."
Bec Pearson Assistant Head of Junior School, Leading Learning, All Saints Anglican School
"Equally popular is the physical challenge aspect of the playground. The climbing structures, balance elements, and obstacle-style features encourage students to test their strength, coordination, and confidence in a fun and safe environment. It's wonderful to see so many children engaged, active, and smiling as they explore the space."

Key Design Elements

Treehouse Structure

Multi-level elevated platforms that work with existing mature trees, creating an immersive treehouse experience.

Physical Challenge

Climbing structures, balance elements, and obstacle features that test strength and coordination.

Giant Slide

A standout feature that brings excitement and joy, sized appropriately for older children's sense of adventure.

Nature Integration

Design that works with and around existing mature trees, preserving the natural character of the site.

The Ecology of Play

At All Saints Anglican School, we applied the Ecology of Play principles to create a treehouse-style playground that integrates with mature trees, offering physical challenges and natural play experiences that support the developmental needs of Years 3-6 students.

1

Unstructured Time

Spaces that allow children to simply be, without every moment managed or optimised.

2

Freedom to Choose

Environments that support independent decision-making, even if choices lead to failure.

3

Endless Possibilities

Spaces that whisper "what if?" instead of dictating "you must."
