The Project

Happy Hearts Goodna partnered with Wearthy to create an outdoor learning environment that would set a new benchmark for early childhood education spaces in the Ipswich region. The vision was to design a playground where children could experience authentic nature connection while developing essential physical, social, and cognitive skills through play.

The resulting design earned recognition from the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects, receiving the prestigious 2023 Play Spaces Award for its innovative approach to nature-based learning environments.

Design Philosophy

Every element was designed to support children's natural curiosity and desire to explore.

Nature Integration

Seamless blending of natural materials and living elements to create an immersive outdoor experience.

Child-Led Discovery

Open-ended spaces that invite children to create their own play narratives and learning journeys.

Appropriate Challenge

Age-appropriate risk opportunities that build confidence, resilience, and physical competence.

Social Connection

Spaces designed to encourage collaborative play, shared experiences, and community building.

The Ecology of Play

At Happy Hearts Goodna, we applied our Ecology of Play framework to create spaces that honour children's innate need for unstructured time, freedom to choose, and endless possibilities.

1

Unstructured Time

Spaces that allow children to simply be, without every moment managed or optimised.

2

Freedom to Choose

Environments that support independent decision-making, even if choices lead to failure.

3

Endless Possibilities

Spaces that whisper "what if?" instead of dictating "you must."
