"Our playground at Pod Early School (Newmarket) is the heart of our centre. A communal space where all age groups come together, children enjoy interacting with natural elements including rock beds, water ways, and herb gardens. Simply put, it is a natural environment where children can celebrate the joys of childhood."
Lauren Fraser Director of Operations, POD Early School

The Project

POD Early School Newmarket envisioned a playground that would become the central gathering place for their entire community: a space where children of all ages could come together to explore, discover, and connect with nature.

Working closely with Director Lauren Fraser and her team, Wearthy designed an integrated outdoor environment featuring rock beds for sensory exploration, flowing waterways for scientific discovery, and herb gardens that connect children to food systems and seasonal cycles.

The resulting design was recognised with the 2022 AILA Play Spaces Award for its innovative approach to creating a cohesive outdoor learning environment that serves the needs of all age groups.

Key Design Elements

Natural elements that engage children's senses and curiosity at every turn.

Rock Beds

Sensory-rich areas with varied textures and materials for tactile exploration and imaginative play.

Waterways

Interactive water features that encourage experimentation, scientific thinking, and collaborative problem-solving.

Herb Gardens

Living gardens that teach children about food systems, responsibility, and connection to seasonal cycles.

Multi-Age Integration

Thoughtful zoning that allows all age groups to share the space while meeting their developmental needs.

The Ecology of Play

At POD Newmarket, the playground truly became the heart of the centre, a place where learning happens naturally through exploration and discovery.

1

Unstructured Time

Spaces that allow children to simply be, without every moment managed or optimised.

2

Freedom to Choose

Environments that support independent decision-making, even if choices lead to failure.

3

Endless Possibilities

Spaces that whisper "what if?" instead of dictating "you must."
