Professional Development Sessions

Five sessions, each built around one question at the centre of everyday practice. Open a session outline for the full details.

Relationships, environments and opportunity

Ecology of Play

Children's play is shaped by opportunities, relationships, adult practice, materials, culture and the conditions around them. This session helps educators see the whole ecology and make more thoughtful decisions.

“What is our environment making possible for the children who use it?”

Purpose, evidence and judgement

Professional Bravery in Risky Play

In a climate of heightened scrutiny, educators can feel pressure to remove uncertainty from children's play. This session builds the confidence to keep meaningful challenge while showing careful reasoning, supervision and professional responsibility.

“Can we explain what we observed, why the play mattered and how we made the decision?”

Effort, movement and emerging capability

Physical Play and Brain Development

Children learn with their whole bodies. Drawing on developmental research, including neuroscientist Kelly Lambert's work, this session reconsiders the place of effort, movement and purposeful challenge in everyday play.

“Where can children use their bodies to work, persist, experiment and experience competence?”

Seeing clearly and cultivating practice

Observation as Stewardship

Every environment tells a story through the ways children use it. This practical session strengthens educators' ability to notice patterns, question assumptions and cultivate environments in response to children.

“What might we understand if we observed before trying to change the play?”

Safer environments and confident teams

Safety by Design

Children's safety is paramount. This session brings environmental design, safeguarding, team culture and purposeful play into one conversation, so adults can see clearly, supervise thoughtfully and respond consistently.

“How do our environment and everyday decisions work together to protect children and support their development?”

Complements service procedures and required child safety and child protection training. It does not replace mandatory training or regulatory obligations.
