Outdoor play spaces designed to engage every sense

Designing Playgrounds That Engage Every Sense

Children experience the world through their senses. At Wearthy, we design sensory-rich outdoor play environments that engage touch, sight, sound, smell, movement, and body awareness. Our sensory playgrounds support children's sensory processing development while providing rich, nature-based play experiences.

With 200+ playgrounds delivered across Australia, we understand how to create spaces that balance stimulating and calming sensory inputs. Our designs cater to all children, including those with sensory processing differences, ensuring every child can engage meaningfully with their outdoor environment.

Sensory Play Elements

Tactile Play

Textured walls, sand pits, mud kitchens, bark surfaces, smooth stones, and varied planting that children can touch, manipulate, and explore with their hands and feet.

Visual Play

Colour gardens, light and shadow features, reflective surfaces, moving elements like wind spinners, and natural patterns that stimulate visual tracking and attention.

Auditory Play

Musical instruments, wind chimes, water features, rustling grasses, bird-attracting plants, and sound tubes that develop auditory discrimination and attention.

Vestibular (Movement)

Swings, spinning elements, balance beams, stepping stones, slopes, and climbing structures that develop the vestibular system and support coordination and balance.

Proprioceptive (Body Awareness)

Heavy work activities like digging, pushing, pulling, climbing, and carrying. Log balance beams, rope bridges, and boulder scrambles that build body awareness and regulation.

Olfactory & Nature

Aromatic herb gardens, flowering native plants, eucalyptus, lavender, and sensory paths through natural landscapes that engage smell and connect children with the environment.

Our Sensory Playground Design Process

01

Discovery

We begin by understanding the sensory needs of the children at your centre, your philosophy, and the unique characteristics of your outdoor space.

02

Design

Our team maps sensory zones across your site, balancing stimulating and calming areas to create a cohesive sensory landscape that supports all children.

03

Construction

We build your sensory playground using natural, tactile materials with minimal disruption to centre operations, ensuring quality at every stage.

04

Certification

Every sensory playground is independently certified to AS 4685 safety standards and assessed for NQF compliance before handover.
